Gazebos and pavilions are commonly mistaken for each other because they have similar designs with solid roofs. However, they do have a few notable differences.
Gazebos
Gazebos are outdoor shade structures with a solid roof and partially open sides that can even be screened in. The most telling feature of gazebos is their shape. They are typically shaped as an octagon or oval, but can be rectangular designs as well.
Pavilions
A pavilion is a roofed structure with completely open sides and no built-in floor. The roof is typically supported by 4-6 posts or more, depending on the size.
Pavilions are meant to blend into the landscape more so than gazebos while providing a comfortable, shaded spot to gather with friends and family. And these days, they’re often built over outdoor kitchens or next to pools to provide eating and relaxation space that doesn’t block views or conversations between people doing different activities.
